The 9 Days Talo Bhutan Mask Dance Festival in Bhutan is well known for its mask dances and the Atsara dances. An equally popular attraction, which has a deep religious and historical significance, is the Zhungdra which is a Classical dance by the Talo Dance troupe. The three songs of Mani Sum, which comprise the Zhundra set, are performed as the closing item on each day of the three days of the Festival(Tshechu). The three songs, Samyi Sala (performed on the first day), Drukpa Dungey (second day) and Thowachi Gangi Tselay on the final day, are the pride of the Talo community.

Detailed Itinerary for 9 Days Talo Bhutan Mask Dance Festival

Day 01. Arrive Paro by flight – Thimphu (Altitude: 2320 m) (Distance: 54 km, 1 hr)

Our Guide from Yak Holidays will receive you at the Airport and drive to Thimphu. Visit Tamchog Monastery on the way.

After lunch,

  • Changangkha Monastery
  • Takin Preserve centre
  • Tashichho Dzong.

Dinner and overnight in Hotel Migmar or similar. www.hotelmigmar.com

Day 02. Thimphu Sightseeing: (Altitude 2320 m)After breakfast, visit to:

  • National Library
  • Painting School- Commonly known as Arts & Crafts School or Painting School, the Institute offers a six-year course on the 13 traditional arts and crafts of Bhutan.
  • National Memorial Chorten – built in 1974 in the memory of Bhutan’s third King, His Late Majesty King Jigme Dorji Wangchuk.
  • Nunnery- Zilukha nunnery in Drupthob Goemba, Thimphu is biggest nunnery in Bhutan.

After lunch, visit to:

  • Buddha Point (Kuensel Phodrang) – visitors can get a good overview of the Thimphu valley from the Buddha point.
  • Weekend market – Located below the main town, near the Wangchhu River, Thimphu weekend market is by far the largest domestic market for the farmers in Bhutan. .

Dinner and overnight in Hotel Migmar or similar.

Day 03. Thimphu – Punakha: (Altitude 1310 m) (76 Km, 3 hrs drive). After breakfast, drive to Punakha via Dochula Pass (3116 m)

  • Dochula – You can see the higher Himalayas, if the weather permits
  • Royal Botanical Park at Lam Pelri.
  • Chhimi Lhakhang – dedicated to Lama Drukpa Kuenley also known as “Divine Madman”.

After lunch,

  • Punakha Dzong – Built in 1637, by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal.

Day 04. Punakha – Talo Tshechu: The Thongdrel will be unfurled early in the morning and then the different mask dances and folk dances will take place.
In the afternoon, hike to Khamsum Yulley Lhakhang.

Dinner and O/N in Meri Puensum Resort or similar.

Day 05. Punakha – Gangtey (Altitude 3120 m) (Distance: 66 km, 3 hrs): After breakfast visit to:

  • Wangdiphodrang Dzong razed by fire in 2012, (from outside) built in 1638; under construction now.
  • Gangtey Gompa – Gyaltse Pema Thinley, the grandson and mind reincarnation of Pema Lingpa founded the Temple in 1613, and Tenzin Legpai Dhendup.

After lunch,

  • Explore Phobjikha valley, famous for the Black Necked Cranes during winter.

Dinner and overnight at the Theckchen Phodrang Guest House or similar

Day 06. Gangtey – Thimphu (Altitude 2320 m) (143 km, 6 hrs.)After breakfast, drive to Thimphu. Lunch, will be served on the way. In the evening, free for shopping and photography in the town. Dinner and overnight in Hotel Migmar or similar.

Day 07. Thimphu – Paro: (Altitude 2280) (Distance 54 km, Drive Time 1 hour):  After breakfast, drive to Paro.

  • Ta Dzong (built in1656 and renovated in 1968).
  • Paro Rimpung Dzong (literally meaning “Heap of Jewels”, built in 1646

After lunch, visit to

  • Ruins of the Drukgyal Dzong
  • Kichu Lhakhang built in 659 A.D.

Day 08. Paro Sightseeing: (Altitude 2280 m). After breakfast,

  • Hike to Taktsang Monastery.
  • Visit to a Farm house.

Day 09. Paro Departure: (Altitude 2280 m) Early morning, drive to the airport and farewell.
