12 Days Kurjey Lhakhang Bhutan Festival Tour

12 Days Kurjey Lhakhang Bhutan Festival Tour

Sketch Itinerary

The 12 days Kurjey Lhakhang Bhutan festival tour coincides with the birth anniversary of Guru Rinpoche. Different kinds of mask dances are performed during the festival apart from traditional, folk songs and dances. The celebration happens at Kurjey Temple, situated at Kurjey in the Chokhor valley in Bumthang locale.

Kur means “Body” and Jey means “Print” which is  still there in a cave in the lhakhang premises.

Also not to forget Sindhu Raja of Choekor, for whom the great saint Guru Rinpochhe came to Bumthang and cured him of a significantly dreaded illness wherein his soul was put into pause mode by the chief local deity of Bumthang. It was in fact Guru Rinpoche who conducted the first Tshechu in Bhutan in the 7th century to subdue all negative entities and spread the Buddha darma in Bhutan. This is now prevalent in all the 20 districts of Bhutan.  The mask dances of all his eight (8) manifestations were conducted at the Kurjey Lhakhang. This legacy has been carried on for centuries every year till today. But this heavenly combination of the two legends are sometimes forgotten to be remembered.
