About Bhutan : Bhutan History & Culture
About Bhutan – Nestled in the undulating folds of the Himalayas, the Kingdom of Bhutan is special to people who want to see centuries-old culture thriving with modernity. We are proud to tell the world that Bhutan could perhaps be one of the happiest countries, not simply because the country has adopted the philosophy of Gross National Happiness, but because of its ecological richness, thriving cultural heritage, and strong family values.
Bhutan is one of the last remaining bastions of Mahayana Buddhism. And yet it’s also the newest democracy in the world. The fourth King His Majesty Jigme Singye Wangchuck told his people that if Bhutan is to prosper and flourish, they must accept the new polity. Thus, in March 2008, Bhutan went to exercise polls to elect the first batch of parliamentarians and a new Prime Minister according to the new constitution.
The country’s small population of about 750,000 people is scattered over the mountains and across the valleys and live in harmony with nature. The towering mountains and verdant hills are believed to be abodes of gods and goddesses. Visitors say Bhutan is a rare intersection of modernity and value-laden civilization, weaving amazingly unique stories. The country’s history proudly gives a special place to the fact that it never experienced the yoke of colonization of any kind. Sandwiched between the two Asian giants : India to the south and China to the north, Bhutan quietly follows its own unique progressiveness towards the modern world of today.
Kingdom of Bhutan – First Carbon-neutral country
In 2009, Bhutan pledged to remain a carbon-neutral country for all times to come; and though the country is grappling with acute economic demands, it is willing to forgo rapid industrialization and exploration of minerals for the sake of emitting less and absorbing other countries carbon. This is why Bhutan is ranked as one of the top ten biodiversity hotspots in the world. And of course, it is a popular tourist destination. Hundreds of tourists who came to Bhutan through Yak Holidays Int’l had beautiful memories to take. They say their travel experience in Bhutan continues to haunt their travel-thirsty dreams. We welcome you to Bhutan, and assure you that the stories you hear, the places you see, the unique culture you experience will be refreshingly fascinating.
